Conflict happens everyday in relationships, resolving them is usually the goal of those involved especially the person in the wrong side.
A relationship conflict is any act that portrays a disagreement which may include an argument. A relationship can either be emotional, biological or professional. Conflict sometimes arise to clear the air issues which needs a discussion between partner, it is caused by different reasons. Some of which are;
- Information: When the information giving is incomplete or untrue. Inaccurate information which could be regarded as a total lie brings about conflicts among partners in any relationship.
- Environment: Something in the environment leads to the conflict.
- Skills: In a work place, when an employee lacks the proper skills for doing their work, this could result into a conflict. No business owner likes running a possible loss, making sure all employees act accordingly is one of their goals.
- Values: When a clash of personal values and beliefs which start out as a discussion result into a conflict.
- Participation: Lack of participation in common benefits is one of the causes of conflict, when a person or persons in a relationship refuses to play their parts towards the common goals of the relationship.
- Finances: This is a cause of conflict most especially in emotional relationships. It could be a cause also in professional relationships. In an emotional relationship, between married couples or dating couples finance is a common cause of conflict. Misuse of funds by one partner in a joint account, denial of funds to a dependent partner, where in the financially stable partner refuses to release funds asked by the dependent one in the relationship. Also in a professional relationship, misappropriation of funds or embezzlement of money by an employee or business partner could also lead to a conflict. Conflicts like this mostly result in an argument.
Resolving conflicts can be easily done by following each steps below.
- Set a discussion time: choosing a time that is convenient for both parties involved should be done. Everyone has to be present.
- Invite a third party: This is an optional choice. If the issue at hand requires an external view, judgement and most especially pacification, a third party should be involved.
- Figure out the main issue: The main issue and cause of the conflict should be figured out. All statements and points made should be centered around the main issue.
- Establish common goals: Common goals should be set. How do you intend to resolve the issue? What should have been done or achieved? What you both want for the benefit of the relationship should be discovered and established.
- Discuss how to achieve the goals: Talk on how to achieve the goals. The necessary steps to take. Discuss on what resources would be needed in achieving those goals.
- Determine resolution roles: Each party involved must play a part in resolving the issues and achieving the goals. Roles should be given out and works assigned to each for the common benefit of the relationship.
In carrying out each step, the attitude of all parties involved play an active role in determining the resolution of conflict.While resolving conflict both parties must;
- Be direct in all their statements. There won’t be any need to beat around the bush as only points would be needed to resolve a conflict.
- In an emotional relationship, talk about their feelings without blaming their partners.
- Be ready to listen without interruption. Don’t automatically object to the other party’s complaints.
- Hide all feelings of contempt towards the other party. Be open minded and focus on what is being said at the moment.
Although, not all of these steps might seem easy to follow, but with the right amount of determination and patience, resolving the conflict is bound to yield a positive result.
